Sustainable Living
Following this Integrated Unit, "Canteen Crusade", it is recommended that a follow-up Unit investigates the importance of Sustainable Living, and in particular, sustainable food production.
The Rich Task for this Unit would involve students designing and planting their own Vegie Patches within the school to assist with food production for the School Canteen. They would be using their newly implemented Healthy Eating Menu in their decisions on what to plant.
Unquestionably, School Vegetable (and Fruit) Gardens are a great way to teach children about the food they eat whilst providing them with an authentic, meaningful way of engaging with the Unit. What's more, it is an effective way to educate children, and the wider school community, about the nutritious advantages of fresh, locally grown food while focusing on sustainable agriculture.
An excursion to the CERES Sustainability Hub in Brunswick, Melbourne would play a vital role in this Unit, and engage students in sustainable food production, but also provide opportunities to discuss a wide range of key sustainability issues.
Incursions are available if a visit to CERES is not possible for your class.
